THE THIRD SECRET OF
THE CHRISTIAN LIFE

...to obey is better than sacrifice, And to heed than the fat of rams. (1 Samuel 15:22)

The righteousness of the upright shall deliver them: but transgressors shall be taken in their own wickedness....The righteous is delivered out of trouble.... (Proverbs 11:6 & 8)

...by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. (1 John 2:3)

THE THIRD SECRET IS:
Obedience

Listening to a baseball game on the radio, reading about a basketball game in the newspaper or watching a football game cannot prepare a person to compete in an actual contest. Everything from becoming a musician, a soldier or an athlete demands training, conditioning and practice. In the same way the Christian walk involves training, conditioning and practice. Many believers approach their Christian walk and renewing the mind as "a viewer sport" and intellectual activity. They are surprised that listening to a sermon on the radio, reading a good Christian book, or attending church once a week doesn't prepare them for all of life's spiritual battles.

While meditating on Scripture is important, renewing the mind involves more than reading and thinking about Scripture's truths. Renewing the mind involves obedience -- establishing new pathways of conduct -- Christlike patterns of behavior. Christlike patterns of behavior established in the believer's life have a healing effect and produce spiritual strength and resilience. The pursuit of virtue builds strength of character, and it is the pursuit of these new pathways that equip us to resist temptation.
